Ullastret, a bit further away, is an ancient Iberian village variously occupied by Greeks and Romans over the centuries. The ruins are really worth a visit and the museum is better than many with lots to see and learn.
This is an extensive Greek and Roman archaelogical site overlooking the Mediterranean near L’Escala. It’s is an absolutely beautiful place for a start. You can learn a lot about the Greek and Roman cultures and architecture and the museum is very fine.
Just beware, there is not a lot of shade and the sun gets very hot as you walk round this enormous site. For information on Empuries, click here.
There are some lovely places to visit near Figueres too…
Peralada is nice small town near Figueres which makes some pleasant wines. It has a casino housed in a castle surrounded by beautiful gardens. It is also famous for its summer music festival, the Festival Castell de Peralada. Click here to see if there is something going on during your stay.
Mas Marce
In the village of Siurana is the farm of Mas Marce, home of the sheep’s milk which goes into the yoghurt, recuit etc that you can get at La Recuiteria. You can visit the farm and see the sheep and how the products are made, and taste some. You can also see how the sheep’s wool is made into various things. Click here to see Mas Marce’s website.
