Just 75 minutes from our holiday rentals in Sant Feliu de Guixols – then return to relative peace and lots of comfort!
There is just too much to say about Barcelona and there are tons of guide books to help you on your way….
So, on this page, we give you a few basics just to get you started and tell you about the places we like best. But this information is by no means exhaustive!
If you are planning to go to Barcelona, let us know and we will send you a small guide we put together for some friends. It is relatively old now, but it has the fundamentals in it. From time to time we will update it, but it is no substitute for an up to date guide book.
The most important advice we can give you is to book as many of the sights you want to see in advance on the internet. In this way you could save hours of queuing. You may be able to buy a Barcelona Card giving you discounts on travel and visits.
Getting there
There are good coaches from Sant Feliu and also a pretty good train service from Caldes de Malavella.
Car is very doable, but you have to be able to brave the big city!
Try to go as early as you can as things shut at lunchtime (can be between 13.00 and 16.00). 09.00 to 09.30 would be good – and you will have more time in the relative cool.
A good place to park and see the classic sights
When we go to Barcelona, we always park the car in the underground car park at the Placa de la Catedral. You reach it going down Via Laietana towards the sea (downhill!!) on the right. Click here for the location.
This is handy for:
- Las Ramblas, a must, with the fantastic La Boqueria market which is open both morning and afternoon. Here is the website. This market is a real functioning market used by local people and restauranteurs if you penetrate beyond the first few “touristic” stalls.
- Placa de Catalunya and Passeig de Gràcia, good for posh shops!
- Two of the most famous Gaudi buildings are situated on the Passeig de Gràcia. Casa Batllo (about half way up on the left, see this website) and Casa Mila (La Pedrera, near the top on the right, see this website). You can visit both if these and they are pretty interesting for all ages.
- Sometimes, in the Cathedral square, they dance the Catalan Sardanes, but I’m afraid we don’t know how to find out when
- El Palau de la Musica Catalana up Laietana on the right. This is a beautiful modernist music palace around which there are guided tours Here is their website. And if you look in advance, you might even be able to book to go to a concert!
- El Barri Gotic, which you just walk round and enjoy!
A useful note about big car parks…
They have a fantastic system in the bigger car parks in Catalunya. There are sensors above each of the parking spaces and when they are full a red light shows. When they are empty the light is green. Cool huh?!
Other great places in Barcelona
The Sagrada Família is a fantastic Gaudi cathedral designed in the Naturalistic style. We would not recommend La Sagrada Família to anyone with mobility issues unless you only want to look from the outside. There are lots of quite challenging stairs.
Here is the link to the Sagrada Família website.
Parc Guell is equally fantastic and interesting for young people too. Check out Parc Guell’s website.
You now have to pre book (and pay!!) to visit the core parts of the park. This is because the upkeep is costing a lot and also because there are simply too many visitors to manage nowadays.
So do get onto their website and book well in advance!
