Girona – historic city made more famous by Game of Thrones!
Girona is a marvellous university City, with the best of all worlds for visitors. Architecture, history, style, gastronomy all play their part in Girona. And you can also go mad with the trendy shops in both the old and the new parts of town! On this page we merely scratch the surface of this lovely place, but we hope we will give you some ideas for your own adventures.
Things to see include:
The Cathedral
The Cathedral of Saint Mary of Girona (Catedral de Santa Maria de Girona) is the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Girona.
Its interior includes the widest Gothic nave in the world, with a width of 22 metres (72 ft), and the second widest of any church after that of St. Peter’s Basilica (for comparison, the width of the nave of Reims is 14.65 m, Saint-Étienne de Sens, 15.25 m and 12 m, in Notre Dame de Paris).
Its construction was begun in the 11th century in Romanesque style, and continued in the 13th century in Gothic style. Of the original Romanesque edifice only the 12th-century cloister and a bell tower remain. The second bell tower was completed in the 18th century.
The Arab Baths
Click through the pictures in the gallery above to get just a flavour of the majestic peace of the Arab Baths. The are one of our favourite places in Girona, buried in the Old Town. Lovely!
The Old City Wall
If you pick the right time of day/year you can walk all round on top of the City Wall, taking in the sights and working up an appetite for lunch or dinner (or indeed breakfast). It’s a lovely, moderately strenuous walk which takes you past some glorious sights.
The multi-coloured houses along the river
Just wander along the River Onyar which separates the old and new parts of Girona, crossing bridges here and there, and take in the beautiful colours of the buildings built on the river – spectacular!
The Angel Garden
The Angel garden is a haven of peace and tranquillity in the middle of the city. Spend a few moments there enjoying the atmosphere and communing with the angels. The gardens are not open all of the time, so it’s best to check at the tourist office just as you enter the Old Town.
In October of every year, there is a meeting there of people who claim to have met angels. We have never been but it sounds like a lovely thing to do.
Casa Masó
This was the family home of architect Rafael Masó (1880-1935). This is one of his most important architectural works and the only one of the famous houses over the River Onyar (in Girona) that is open to the public. You can also do night visits which are wonderful too!
