You don’t have to dine out, and you don’t have to cook in Sant Feliu de Guixols!
Plats “per emportar” or “to take away”, are very big around here for anyone who wants to eat well but who does not have time to cook themselves or dally in a restaurant. The food is generally made fresh every day and it’s a great way of sampling authentic Sant Feliu life. You will find many locals in the queues at these shops – especially at Can Prat.
Can Prat
Can Prat is a Sant Feliu de Guixols institution. You will find it on the street to the left of the fish market (see the basics map page on your website).
It has recently celebrated its 50th anniversary and it is plain to see why.
They do carry some basics, but most of the shop is turned over to special things – cocktail biscuits, nuts etc, bits of foie gras, artisan charcuterie…
But the piece de resistance of Can Prat is their back counter (plus the chilled counter to its left hand side). There you will find the dishes and staples they have cooked up for today to be grabbed by busy housewives (usually) who do not have time to cook.
There is usually (remember, freshly cooked) pasta, pulses, hard boiled eggs, the ingredients for escalivada (barbecued pepper, aubergine, onion that you can have on toast with a couple of anchovies), olives, anchovies etc etc.
You will also see salted cod soaking and ready for use, either to cook or to eat as it is in a salad “esqueixada (eskershada)” or “empedrat”.
Then there are the whole dishes, ready to warm up and eat. These can include (depending on the season), meatballs, peas or beans in a sauce with ham and other delicious bits, chicken with prunes – oh the list goes on! Go in and try – just point to what you fancy…
What we recommend you try… Well, apart from everything… do try the anchovies. They are not nearly as salty (or “hairy”) as the ones in the UK and are great on toast, with escalivada or with egg. If they have any (depending on the time of year) try the croquetes amb ceps (croquet potatoes with ceps). All of the croquettes are great but these are the best!
If you are adventurous, get a little esqueixada (eskershada) or empredrat. They are both little bits of salted cod with onion, tomato, olives etc but the empedrat also comes with little white beans. Don’t knock it until you have tried a little!
But basically, just ask for a little (“dos cents grams” or “dos cientos gramos”) and try… See them on Google maps by clicking here.
In the freezer on the right as you go in you will find Catalan luxury ice cream Farggi. This is made properly with real cream and fresh ingredients and knocks all that other stuff into a cocked hat!
Cuinats del Carrer Major
Much newer in town, but very interesting is a shop called Cuinats del Carrer Major. They are more geared towards pure takeaways, so no gourmet add-ons like cocktail biscuits, champagne etc etc.
They also have a stall in the indoor market with a selection of their wares…
Good friends of both Maremar and Marona are the Schwinds who recommend both this shop and its offshoot in the market hall. The food hall stall has salads and pre cooked meals. Their favorites are Pulpo a la vinagreta, Esqueixada, Lentil Salad, and Bean Salad. Highly recommended!
