Sant Feliu de Guixols, home to our holiday rentals, is a working fishing port, so you have a great chance to sample some of the finest fish and seafood!
We just love fish and if you do too you are in exactly the right place when you are in Sant Feliu!
On this page we take you through some of the fishy delights that we love best and that you might like to try.
But please do also look at our page on a couple of local fish shops, the fish you can get here and then a page dedicated to the seafood…
But, for now, here are a few things you might not know but which you should try…
Esqueixada (eskasharda) – is made from small pieces of salt cod (uncooked but perfectly safe and delicious) mixed with onions, tomatoes, olives, oil and seasoning.
It is really refreshing on a hot day and so good for you that it doesn’t bear thinking about!
You can find it in restaurants and in the legendary Can Prat to take away.
Empedrat – the little brother of esqueixada. Made exactly the same way except with baby white beans (and the odd chickpea). It is on the left of the plate in this picture.
Bacalla (bakayar) is cod or salted salted cod and very fine indeed. This picture may look a bit daunting and the idea of “salt cod” may not appeal. However, it is soaked to get all of the salt out (you can ask for some to use today (already ready) or to soak for a day or two longer.
When it is cooked up in a tomato and onion sauce it is absolutely delicious and of course it is used to make esqueixada and Empedrat.
Suquet (sukkette) is a gorgeous fish stew with everything in it!
This one is made with hake (the long bits), monkfish (the butterfly bits) and a local fish that might be “roger” (“roojay”).
The sauce is all potato and garlic.
Be warned though, that everyone has their own suquet recipe and some restaurants go more “off piste” than others!
Gambes de Palamos – quite expensive (but worth every penny) large prawns caught by the fishermen of Palamos.
- They need to be barely cooked with a sprinkling of salt and they are the best prawns in the world!
You can get them in the indoor market and they also serve them at Eldorado Mar (the best!) and Maria Rosa (pretty darned good!).
See also our page on seafood… click here.
Lluç (“lyoos”) – fresh hake from the Mediterranean.
You can get them in the indoor market and they also serve it at Eldorado Mar and many other places. There are so many different ways to have it that we have no space for it here.
Chipirons or calamarçets (“calamarsets”) are little baby squid and they are absolutely delicious.
In these pictures, on the left they are sauteed with broad beans and on the right they are “fregides”, fried in a flour batter- absolutely irresistible!
These succulent and not-too-salty anchovies are just the job on top of escalivada on toast… You can get them at Can Prat and they are well worth a try.
